I see the same pattern every day, everything looks fine from the outside. You're hitting your deadlines, showing up for everyone, your children are thriving, your house looks great, everything that needs to be done is done. On paper, everything is great. And yet on the inside, you feel exhausted, disconnected, and like you're just going through the motions.
That feeling is more common than you might think. And it's often a sign that the life you're living isn't actually yours.
This is where life coaching comes in. Not the kind that promises you'll make six figures in 90 days, but the kind that helps you understand why you feel the way you feel, and what to actually do about it.
Life coaching is a collaborative process that helps you move from where you are now to where you want to be. A qualified life coach helps you identify what's holding you back, understand your patterns and behaviours, and take meaningful action toward the life you actually want.
It's worth being clear about what life coaching is not. It isn't therapy, it doesn't treat or diagnose mental health conditions. It isn't mentoring, where someone tells you what to do based on their own experience. And it is absolutely not the unregulated, unqualified "coaches" flooding social media with promises of transformation in a week.
A qualified coach will have completed a recognised coaching programme, will be trained in evidence-based methods, and will understand the difference between coaching and counselling.
What real life coaching does is create a safe, structured space for you to look inward. And that process of looking inward is where real change begins.
My favourite way to describe life coaching is this: bringing the subconscious to the conscious.
The autonomic nervous system, which controls so much of your body's automatic responses, is governed by your subconscious mind and operates largely beyond your conscious control. This means that the patterns you repeat, the way you respond to stress, the people you attract and the situations you stay in too long are not random. They are rooted in beliefs and programmes that formed long before you were old enough to question them.
Good coaching brings awareness to thoughts, emotions, and behaviours at the conscious level, while also acknowledging and working with the deeper beliefs that sit beneath the surface.
If you've ever known what you should do but found yourself doing the opposite, that's your subconscious running an old programme. Coaching helps you identify what those programmes are, where they came from, and how to begin rewriting them.
This is exactly what happened with Lisa.
Lisa came to me wanting to incorporate a daily walk into her routine. Simple enough, or so we thought. But as we dug into what was stopping her, something much bigger surfaced. Lisa had spent her whole life putting everyone else's needs before her own, she hadn't learnt to do this consciously, her nervous system had learnt it as a survival strategy, so saying yes to herself felt uncomfortable. A walk just for her, with no purpose other than her own wellbeing, didn't fit the pattern she'd been running for decades.
Once Lisa could see that pattern clearly, everything shifted. She didn't just start walking. She joined a running club, built something that was entirely hers, and eventually found the courage to take a whole new career direction. The walk was never really about the walk. It was the doorway into understanding herself.
One of the most powerful shifts coaching creates is helping you see how much energy you spend living a life built on other people's expectations.
You should take a certain career path. You should be able to handle everything life throws at you with ease. You should want what everyone else seems to want.
This kind of living is not just emotionally exhausting. It is physically taxing too. Research published in the Journal of Positive Psychology shows that coaching has significant positive effects on clients' coping capacity, resilience, subjective wellbeing, and overall performance. But this only works when the goals being pursued are genuinely yours, not inherited from someone else.
When you spend years prioritising everyone else's comfort over your own, your nervous system reads this as a constant low-level threat. You never quite feel safe enough to relax. Over time, that dysregulation shows up as anxiety, fatigue, physical symptoms, overwhelm, and a slow erosion of your sense of self.
Coaching helps you untangle what you actually want from what you've been told you should want. That clarity alone can be life-changing.
The evidence for life coaching is substantial. According to the International Coach Federation, 73% of coaching clients report that coaching positively impacted their relationships, 72% saw improvement in their communication skills, and 70% reported better work performance. 67% experienced improvements in work-life balance and 63% in overall wellness.
80% of coaching clients also report improved self-esteem or self-confidence as a direct result of coaching.
Beyond the statistics, the benefits of coaching tend to ripple outward into every area of life. When you understand your patterns, your relationships improve. When you start honouring your own needs, your energy returns. When you stop performing a version of yourself that doesn't fit, you start attracting people and opportunities that align with who you are, and when that shift happens, you naturally feel more joy and happiness.
Laura is a really good example of this.
Laura came to me unhappy in her job. She knew something needed to change but couldn't quite see what. Through our sessions, she started to uncover what she actually loved, not what she thought she should love, what she was told to love or what made sense on paper. She discovered a real passion for travel, and rather than dismissing it as a nice idea, she found the courage to start her own travel agency. That business now allows her to live part of the year abroad. The life she has now looked nothing like the one she was living when we first spoke, and everything like the one she had quietly wanted for years.
1. It helps you see what you have been missing
We all have patterns we can't see clearly because we are too close to them. A coach holds up a mirror and helps you recognise what's driving your behaviour, without judgement. This is often the most important step, because you can't change what you can't see. Lisa thought she just needed a nudge to get outside. What she actually needed was to understand why putting herself first felt so wrong.
2. It connects you to your nervous system signals
My coaching incorporates nervous system regulation, which encourages you to listen to your body, not just your mind. That gut feeling you've been ignoring, the tension in your shoulders, the feeling of dread that descends on Sunday evenings, these are signals. Coaching helps you learn what they mean and how to respond to them before they get louder.
3. It helps you set goals that actually fit your life
So many women come to coaching with goals they've absorbed from somewhere else, a promotion they don't really want, a £10k a month income aspiration or a lifestyle that looks impressive but feels wrong. Coaching helps you get clear on what you genuinely want, and then build a realistic path to get there. For Laura, that meant completely redirecting her career rather than simply trying to feel better about the one she already had.
4. It breaks cycles of people-pleasing and perfectionism
People-pleasing isn't a personality flaw. Research shows it is a nervous system survival response, it has been labelled the "fawn response", where the brain learns that keeping others happy is the safest way to stay connected. Coaching helps you understand that pattern at the root level, rather than just trying harder to behave differently.
5. It gives you a space that is entirely yours
Many of the women I work with have never had a conversation that was completely focused on them, what they need, what they feel, what they want. That space is incredibly powerful. It's often the first time someone truly feels heard, and that in itself can be life changing.
A lot of people are surprised to hear that you don't have to be in crisis to benefit from coaching.
A study of 391 people found that one-on-one coaching can improve psychological wellbeing and help mitigate threats to mental health, including excessive stress, low resilience, and poor satisfaction with life. These weren't people who were falling apart. They were people who wanted more, or who had a quiet sense that something needed to shift.
Life coaching is for people who are functioning perfectly well but feel quietly unfulfilled. It's for the one who keeps landing in the same situations and wondering why. It's for the person who is exhausted from being everything to everyone and has slowly lost sight of who they actually are.
You don't need to hit rock bottom to start doing the work. In fact, the earlier you tune in, the less loud your body has to get before you finally listen.
Life coaching isn't a luxury or a last resort. It's a tool for anyone who is ready to stop living on autopilot and start making choices that are genuinely aligned with who they are.
When you bring the subconscious to the conscious, when you understand your patterns rather than fighting them, when you stop measuring your life against what you "should" want and start listening to what actually feels right, things begin to change. Not overnight, but in a way that lasts.
Lisa didn't just start exercising. She found herself. Laura didn't just change jobs. She built a life she loves. And the starting point for both of them was simply a willingness to look inward.
If any of this resonates, the first step is a conversation.
