An entrepreneur struggling with confidence

How to overcome imposter syndrome

March 11, 20243 min read

When I started my first business almost 10 years ago I was lucky enough to be part of a big supportive network of like-minded mums starting businesses. If it wasn’t for this network my business wouldn’t be what it is today, not only did I make amazing contacts and friends but I also learnt some really important lessons in mindset and marketing.

The biggest learning for me was in the mindset between those who were successful and those that could not make their business work. In this network I was regularly coming across highly skilled and experienced people who struggled with crippling imposter syndrome or low confidence. And in contrast those with little to no experience winning big contracts and earning at least £10k per month.

An entrepreneur with imposter syndrome

There were obviously those in the middle muddling along but often missing out on work to those who were winning the bigger contracts.

One thing that I continued to question was why are people that have no experience or knowledge in a particular skillset of industry not only pitching for the work, but also winning it?

And the answer was in their mindset, they had the unwavering belief that they could do it, they would win the work and could build their business based on finding people with the skill to complete the work – and they did.

This is where my passion for helping those with low confidence, imposter syndrome and other limiting beliefs was born. I saw highly skilled people who really wanted the freedom and flexibility of working for themselves return to permanent employment simply because they didn’t know they had a mindset issue, or they didn’t have access to support for their mindset.

So, what can you do if your low confidence/imposter syndrome is holding you back from what you really want to do?

  1. Visualise – visualise yourself doing it anyway, feel all the feelings, see and hear what it would be like to win that client you don’t think you can get right now, or increase your prices. How does it feel?

  2. Remember your skills and experience – remind yourself of your skills, knowledge and experience that got you to this point. List them out and keep a copy where you work so you can be constantly reminded that you deserve this.

  3. Learn from knock-backs – if a client chooses not to work with you this time, learn from it, maybe they didn’t align with your values and work styles, maybe you haven’t quite got your price point right. Take a bit of time to think what you could do differently an try again.

  4. Collect the no’s – business is a numbers game, people have to see your content a certain number of times before enquiring, you need a certain number of enquiries before you get a client, its all about the numbers and “no’s” just mean you are closer to a yes.
