Feeling like you don't belong at work

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

October 27, 20232 min read

I still sometimes feel like a loser kid in high school and I just have to pick myself up and tell myself that I’m a superstar every morning so that I can get through this day and be for my fans what they need for me to be. - Lady Gaga

I have worked with many clients who struggle with imposter syndrome, this is the feeling of being a fraud or an imposter, despite evidence of one’s competence and success. It can be particularly challenging for mums in business who are juggling multiple roles and responsibilities, and often feel like they don’t belong or aren’t good enough.

6 ways to overcome imposter syndrome

If you’re experiencing imposter syndrome, know that you’re not alone. Many successful people, including CEOs, entrepreneurs, and high achievers, have struggled with imposter syndrome at some point in their lives. The good news is that there are strategies you can use to overcome this feeling and build your confidence. 👊

1. Recognise Imposter Syndrome

The first step to overcoming imposter syndrome is to recognise and acknowledge it. Start by paying attention to your thoughts and feelings, and notice when you start doubting your abilities or questioning your success.

2. Reframe your thinking

Instead of focusing on your perceived shortcomings or mistakes, reframe your thinking to focus on your strengths and accomplishments. Practice positive self-talk and remind yourself of your past successes and achievements.

3. Embrace Vulnerability

Accept that it’s okay to be imperfect and to make mistakes. Embrace vulnerability as a way to learn and grow, and use your experiences to become more resilient and adaptable.

4. Connect with others

Reach out to others who have experienced imposter syndrome and connect with a supportive community. Share your experiences and learn from others who have overcome similar challenges.

5. Seek Feedback

Ask for feedback from trusted colleagues, mentors, or coaches. Use this feedback to gain a more objective perspective on your strengths and weaknesses and to identify areas for growth.

6. Take Action

Take small, incremental steps towards your goals and build momentum. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small, and use them as motivation to continue moving forward.

Imposter syndrome is a common experience, and you’re not alone. By recognising and acknowledging it, reframing your thinking, embracing vulnerability, connecting with others, seeking feedback, and taking action, you can overcome imposter syndrome and build your confidence as a mum in business.
