“Values are like fingerprints. Nobodies are the same, but you leave them all over everything you do.” - Elvis Presley
Introduction:
Over the years I have been working on my self development, one thing I have concluded is the importance of my personal values. For years, I didn’t even know what mine were, but my decision making and behaviour were always being guided by them, I just didn’t understand why I was doing what I was doing.
Personal values are the beliefs and principles that individuals hold that shape their behaviour and decision making. They represent what is most important to the individual and guide them in their actions and interactions with the world around them.
Personal values are important because:
By understanding what is most important to you, you can set goals and priorities. This will help you feel in control of the direction of your life, increasing motivation and satisfaction.
By referring to your values when faced with a decision, you will make choices that align with your beliefs. This will help you make decisions with confidence and avoid choices that may conflict with your values or cause inner conflict.
Understanding your personal values requires self reflection and introspection. This process will help you gain a better understanding of yourself and what you stand for. Whilst on this journey you will also recognise your strengths and weaknesses which can lead to personal growth.
Personal values can play a significant role in forming and maintaining relationships. By sharing valued with others, individuals can form deeper connections and mutual respect and understanding. It can also help individuals to avoid relationships with those whose values conflict with their own.
Taking the time to identify personal values and live by them can help you to live a more meaningful, fulfilling life.
