“When someone judges you, it isn’t actually about you. It’s about them and their own insecurities, limitations, and needs” - Lulu
Introduction:
One thing that so many of my clients have in common is that they are worried what people will think of them, a fear of judgement. It shows up in different ways but ultimately affects them achieving their dreams.
The fear of judgement can be particularly strong in mums who often feel pressure to live up to societal expectations and meet the standards of other parents, family members and friends. Social Media can really play a part in how mums feel.
Below I cover a few tips on how mums can start to combat this fear of judgement:
By putting your needs first and saying no when you need to, you can take the burden off yourself and put your emotional wellbeing first. Don’t feel pressured into doing things you don’t want to just because, be firm in communicating your boundaries.
Do you find that you judge yourself harshly whenever you make a mistake or notice a possibly shortcoming? This will only add to your stress and anxiety. Speak to yourself how you would to a friend, would you criticise a friend for a small mistake, or boost them up and build their confidence. Speaking to yourself with kindness and empathy will boost your self-esteem and fill you with confidence.
Remember that everyone has their own struggles, comparing yourself to others can make you feel inadequate or inferior. But you are only seeing a snapshot of their life, every family and situation is unique. Embrace your values and priorities, they are what make you, you.
You don’t have to be friends with everyone, find those that have similar values, struggles and priorities as yourself. It might be in a class, through a friend or even at the school gates. Sharing experiences and supporting each other can help you feel part go a community and overcome your fears.
You can reduce the impact of external criticism by following these tips which will help you feel more resilient and happier. Don’t let worrying what other people think about you stop you from living your best life.
